Ashton Kutcher Invests in Tech Startups? We want you!

Some time ago, I came across an article about Ashton Kutcher and the investments he has made in upcoming tech start-ups. My first thought was: How cool would it be to get someone like him onboard with Intraboom?!

Turns out the “coolness” of having someone like Ashton as an investor in your company is not so obvious to everyone.

I brought up my new discovery on Ashton’s investment strategies to Intraboom’s current angel investors.

“Hey, did you know that Ashton Kutcher invests in tech startups?” My statement was met with a blank stare.

“Wouldn’t it be great if someone like him wanted to invest in Intraboom?” Continued blank stare. Followed by, “Why?”

Apparently, the professional investor philosophy is that “money is just money.” Whether or not it comes form a “cool” source doesn’t matter. Okay, I get that.

But what about the strategic aspect of someone like Ashton Kutcher? Let me explain.

The obvious benefit of having someone like Ashton Kutcher invest in your company is publicity. But that’s really not enough to validate calling him (or any other celebrity) a “strategic investor.”

In my opinion, if you want to gain an understanding of what Aston has to offer a business, all you need to do is go back and watch an episode of “Punk’d.” No, I’m not kidding. What “Punk’d” reveals about Ashton Kutcher, among other things, is that he is incredibly innovative, understands what the public wants, and that he is hella funny.

Humor in business shouldn’t be underestimated: brining a sense of humor to any situation can really help take a business the distance. You have to be able to laugh at your circumstances – and yourself – in order to survive the uphill battles and mishaps that every business encounters on the way to success. Without humor, you might as well pack up and close your doors.

Of course, there is also the aspect of attracting female talent. If working for Intraboom meant working with Ashton Kutcher (even a little bit), let’s face it, the applications would start pouring in.

Skeptics will say that Ashton Kutcher doesn’t understand much about tech start-ups. Or business in general, for that matter. They’ll say that he’s just another Hollywood actor with way too much money that he doesn’t know what to do with. That just because he played Steve Jobs in a movie doesn’t make him a tech angel to be taken seriously.

The skeptics are wrong.

When some people think of Ashton Kutcher, they think of Kelso in That 70’s Show. That guy was a tool. But the real Ashton Kutcher is anything but.

His investment decisions speak for themselves:

- Skype

- Foursquare

- Uber

- BloomThat

- Airtime

- Airbnb

- BitPay

- Socialcam and

- Flipboard, (to name a few.)

Also, if you happened to catch the recent episode of the Shark Tank with Kutcher, you learned another valuable thing about him: He has character. He told Kevin O’Leary, right to his face, what most of us (as human beings) already knew: that it’s not okay to belittle other people, it’s not cool.

When interviewed about his investing, Kutcher has said that he doesn't have a clear strategy, and that he doesn't usually base his decisions on the tech alone. Instead, he says the success of products and startups has to do with people. PERFECT! WE HAVE PEOPLE!

On a more serious note, Ashton says he invests in companies with people that he would want to work for, and he looks for products that solve real problems or deliver something real people want.

Well, we have all that. The only thing we don’t have, when it comes to your typical investment criteria, Ashton, is that we are not a business-to-consumer startup. We offer an all-in-one communication platform for businesses. But other than that one tiny deviation, we are a match made in heaven:

Solving real world problems? Check.

Delivering what people want? Check.

Software that removes friction? Check.

People you'd want to work with? We like to think so.

As I prepare for our company’s first “real” investment round, I’m tempted to limit myself to looking at strategic investors only. People who have something besides money to bring to the table. Because, as someone rightfully pointed out to me, money is just money.

So Ashton, get in touch. We're waiting.
